There are many reasons why you might be interested in buying a semi-truck. Whether you’re expanding your fleet or starting a new business, there are many options available to consider! Our team at White’s International Trucks is here to help you find the best model for your success. Continue reading to learn more about the benefits of choosing to purchase a used semi.

1. Costs

No matter what your situation is, being able to pay less for a good truck is always a benefit. Many used models are only a few years old and have plenty of life left to give. This means you’ll reduce your initial investment costs for the truck itself and have more budget for maintenance, fuel, and other expenses.

2. Nostalgia

It also goes without saying that purchasing a used model can also give you some nostalgia. You may not necessarily want a vintage semi, but it can be exciting to carry on the story of a specific truck or find an option that reminds you of a family member or friend who drove semis. Sometimes the excitement and joy that comes with looking for a used model is more important than the logistics.

3. Personalizations

Another benefit of choosing to look for a used semi-truck is the potential to find unique personalizations and upgrades that the previous owner completed. On the flip side, it can also be easier to customize an older model if you’re wanting to give your truck more personality. Either way, used models typically have more character to build off of!

Maintaining Your Semi https://www.whitestractor.com/maintaining-your-semi/ https://www.whitestractor.com/maintaining-your-semi/#respond Mon, 30 Jan 2023 18:30:52 +0000 https://www.whitestractor.com/?p=996
Maintaining Your Semi
Semi trucks are essential for many industries and our economy. They’re made to transport heavy trailers with various cargo, which means they work a lot and work hard. Our team at White’s International Trucks is here to help you find the right trucking solution. Continue reading for a few maintenance tips you can follow to increase the lifespan of your semi.

Consult the Manual

This advice might get old, but checking the owner’s manual is the best place to start when it comes to maintaining a vehicle. In the manual you can find information regarding the specific parts, systems, and maintenance requirements and processes. If you’re just getting to learn about your truck, you should definitely give it a read.

Start With the Basics

Being able to provide basic routine maintenance is essential for safe and efficient semi performance. This includes engine, tire, electrical, and mechanical care. You should have a regular oil and filter change schedule, frequently check the tire pressure and condition, and monitor the brake systems. You should also maintain functional lighting and keep the interior and exterior clean.

When you follow basic maintenance needs, you will improve the performance of your semi and reduce the chance of experiencing problems that can be prevented.

Don’t Ignore the Bigger Tasks

Many owners/operators will perform the basic maintenance on their semi-trucks, but it’s important to know your local diesel mechanic who can assist with the bigger maintenance concerns. For example, if you need to service the clutch, you will likely need to schedule time in the shop. It’s best to tackle repairs like these early on to reduce damage and downtime.

Keeping your semi well-maintained is the best decision for safety, efficiency, and value. Visit us at one of our North Carolina locations to learn more about your maintenance options. We also have an incredible selection of new semi-trucks if you’re interested in upgrading your current model.

How to Put Snow Chains on Your Semi-Truck https://www.whitestractor.com/how-to-put-snow-chains-on-your-semi-truck/ https://www.whitestractor.com/how-to-put-snow-chains-on-your-semi-truck/#respond Tue, 10 Jan 2023 18:55:13 +0000 https://www.whitestractor.com/?p=1004
Snow Chains on Semi-Truck

There’s no shame in not knowing how to put snow chains on your semi-truck. Some truckers just haven’t encountered snow on their previous hauls, whether it’s due to the routes they have run or just simple inexperience. With winter in full swing, there’s never been a better time to learn. Luckily, White’s International Trucks has created this handy step-by-step guide to teach you everything you’ll need to know.

1. Get Ready

This may seem obvious, but you should put your snow chains on before you need them. When you notice snow piling up, pull over. If the highway you are on has a designated chaining area, use that, but either way, make sure you park in a safe place. Do not install your chains if you lack sufficient light, or if an extreme weather condition like a blizzard is taking place.

Remember that only your drive wheels require chains. You will have to keep them on until the snow stops. Remove the chains if the road becomes clear of snow.

2. Lay Out & Inspect Chains

Before you can install the chains, you should lay them flat and inspect them. Never use broken or damaged chains on your rig.

3. Drape Chains Over Wheels

Start by lifting the chains and draping them over each drive wheel, with equal lengths of chain hanging over the front and back. The front end of the chain should go as close to where the wheel touches the ground as possible, so tuck it into the base. Center the chain on the tire and make it as straight as possible.

4. Drive Over Chains

Enter your cab and start your engine. Drive your truck slowly just a few feet to allow the tires to roll over the chains. When this is done, stop your truck, park, and turn off the engine so you can continue to work on the chains.

5. Tighten & Secure

Using an adjusting wrench, tighten up the cams on your chains so that they are fastened in place. Make sure they are snugly fitted on each wheel before using bungee cords to hook the chains together. (The hooks should be facing out towards you). Before you take off, drive forward a bit to make sure that the chains will not fall off. Once you are confident that they will stay on, you can get on your way!

We here are White’s International Trucks hope this guide makes applying chains to your semi-truck easier. For more information or to view our range of truck models, visit us at one of our seven locations throughout South Carolina, including Goldsboro and Wilson. We can’t wait to see you here!

Finding Places to Rest on the Road https://www.whitestractor.com/finding-places-to-rest-on-the-road/ https://www.whitestractor.com/finding-places-to-rest-on-the-road/#respond Tue, 10 Jan 2023 18:15:53 +0000 https://www.whitestractor.com/?p=1010
Places to Rest on the Road

Some hauls are real marathons, multi-hour multi-state endurance tests that can bring even the most seasoned trucker to the brink. Go too long without a break, and the chances of you making a mistake, whether minor or extremely serious, increase dramatically. On the other hand, some places just don’t have room for a huge truck. That is why White’s International Trucks has put together this guide to finding rest stops on the road.

Have a Plan Ahead of Time

As always, planning ahead is your best option. Familiarize yourself with your route and look for possible rest areas. Pay attention not only to the areas with a lot of places to stop, but also note any long stretches on your route where you might be forced to keep going for an extended period. A good strategy is to save your rests for just before you hit these stretches to minimize the time spent without recharging.

Use Your Smartphone to Your Advantage

Modern technology can be a big help on the road. Apps like AllStays Truck & Travel and iExit Trucks help truckers find places equipped to accommodate their rigs. Download a few of the major apps, and find out which one best serves your needs. Finding fueling stations, hotels, bathrooms, and more has never been easier!

Ask Others For Help

If you are a new trucker, chances are you won’t be familiar with your route and what can be found along it. Asking an older trucker who has run the same route or one in the same area can be a huge help. They may be able to highlight places you might normally overlook, or make recommendations to help you choose between options. Either way, they’re a great resource, so don’t hesitate to ask them about anything you’re struggling with!

Being able to find the right rest stop at the right time can be the difference between a perfectly reasonable challenge and a nightmare haul. With a little prep work, even the longest hauls can be made easier. For more information or to view truck models, visit White’s International Trucks. We maintain seven locations throughout South Carolina, including Greensboro and Highpoint, so we’re never too hard to find.

Caring for Your Truck Windshield https://www.whitestractor.com/caring-for-your-truck-windshield/ https://www.whitestractor.com/caring-for-your-truck-windshield/#respond Fri, 25 Nov 2022 19:21:32 +0000 https://www.whitestractor.com/?p=1016
Truck Windshield

Driving a commercial truck is an important job and is completely essential for our economy! Whether you’re an owner-operator or drive for a fleet, it’s important to take good care of your truck. Our team at White’s International® Trucks is here to be a resource for all of your truck needs, so we’ve created a quick guide for caring for your windshield.

Don’t Ignore Damage

Unfortunately windshield cracks and damage is a common concern for drivers. It’s important to address any damage right away because even minor cracks can cause large problems. Windshield damage can impair visibility and reduce your safety on the road.

If you experience damage on a windshield, get it fixed right away!

Avoid Debris

When possible, it’s best to park your rig away from areas with large amounts of debris. Allowing debris to buildup on your windshield can lead to damage!

Even debris that occurs without parking underneath a tree can lead to problems. Dust and dirt should be removed from your windshield right away. Utilize your washing fluid and keep your windshield wipers in good shape.

Wash Regularly

One of the best ways to keep your windshield in good condition is to regularly wash it. You can use manufacturer grade glass cleaner to avoid streaking and remove the serious grime! Keeping your windshield clean improves visibility and reduces the risk of damage.

Keeping your windshield in great condition is important for your safety on the road. Visit us in North Carolina to stock up on the parts you need and to browse our selection. We also offer rentals and leasing options.

Tips for Preventing Truck Damage https://www.whitestractor.com/tips-for-preventing-truck-damage/ https://www.whitestractor.com/tips-for-preventing-truck-damage/#respond Thu, 20 Oct 2022 20:35:44 +0000 https://www.whitestractor.com/?p=1480
Truck Damage

There can be a lot of hazards on the road that can cause significant damage to your semi truck over time. Your vehicle is crucial for a successful business, so it’s important to be aware of hazards and prevent damage! Our team at White’s International Truck has put together a brief list of ways you can reduce risk and make your deliveries again and again.

1. Pay Attention to Road Conditions

Most truck damage comes from long hours of repetitive use on uneven roads. As you drive, try to avoid large dips and holes in the asphalt. You may also come across various debris that can wear down your tread more quickly.

Extended use paired with frequent encounters with bumps and debris can lead to unbalanced wheels, damaged tires, worn out suspension, and damaged steering columns.

Beyond normal wear and tear from everyday road conditions, there can also be significant damage during atypical weather events. Snow, ice, and even extreme heat can expedite the wear on your truck or lead to major accidents! Proceed with caution.

2. Follow the Weight Limits

Weight capacity limits are set for tractor-trailers for very good reason. Although your semi can handle incredibly heavy loads, there are limits in place to protect you and your truck. Going over the recommended weight capacity will wear down your truck and put strain on your vehicle that it’s not intended to handle. It can also cause you a few headaches on the road if you’re over the weight limit!

3. Keep Up With Preventative Maintenance

Finally, staying up to date with regular maintenance tasks can reduce serious damage over time. Stay on schedule with your oil changes, tire rotations, and inspections.

Your truck is important, so make sure to treat it well. Visit us at one of our seven North Carolina locations to schedule body repair or browse our selection.

Tools Truck Drivers Should Keep in the Cab https://www.whitestractor.com/tools-truck-drivers-should-keep-in-the-cab/ https://www.whitestractor.com/tools-truck-drivers-should-keep-in-the-cab/#respond Thu, 20 Oct 2022 20:30:52 +0000 https://www.whitestractor.com/?p=1486
Truck Driver

Truck driving is an important and sometimes grueling career. Drivers have to be prepared for the unexpected while maintaining a deadline. Our team at White’s International Trucks understands the importance and struggles of being on the road, so we’ve put together a list of tools you should keep on hand.

Tool Kit Checklist

Below we’ve created a list of tools drivers reach for the most often. As you’re updating or creating your own driver tool kit, make sure to mark these off your list!

  • Crescent wrenches are versatile tools that can be useful in many situations. There are a variety of sizes available, so make sure to choose one or two options that can work for your rig.
  • Combination wrenches are another great option because they have open and box ends. Again, make sure to choose sizes that will complement your truck.
  • When you find yourself needing to reach awkward areas, dog wrenches will come in handy for sure.
  • Vice grips are useful for pulling the release arm for your trailer tandems. They can also come in handy during small repairs or adjustments.
  • If you drive a truck, you need a sledgehammer for checking tire pressure and releasing stubborn hitches.
  • Speaking of tires, you better keep an air pressure gauge nearby to confirm low pressure.
  • Electrical tape and wire cutters can be a lifesaver for making quick connection repairs until you can make it back to the shop.
  • ratcheting screwdriver set can be useful in many situations, like repairing a headlight or tightening a screw.
  • You better have a flashlight available for late-night or early-morning deliveries and inspections.
  • Finally, safety gear like gloves, safety glasses, high vis clothing, and traffic cones can keep you safe through the most unexpected situations.

Are there any tools we missed that you swear by keeping in the cab? Visit us at one of our seven North Carolina locations to stock up on what you need or to visit our body shop.
